THE TORNAVIAJE

THE TORNAVIAJE

The second gallery, entitled The Tornaviaje, draws attention to the early period of the galleon trade, starting with the discovery of the return route to Acapulco from Manila. The gallery exhibits the major devotional traditions that developed in the Philippines out of a sense of the dangers of the trade; the earliest arrivals of plant material from the Americas; the system of trade; the changes in Mexico as a result of this traffic of goods; and the walls themselves of the city-fortresses of Manila and Acapulco, which the galleon profits paid for.

The Tornaviaje, or the return route, provides the audience with a sense of how the world changed with the emergence of the galleon trade.
